WHAT IS HEALING?
Healing is a process of coming into
relationship with who we are, a process
of receiving ourselves entirely.
This process allows us to stop slamming
the door on ourselves. We invite
ourselves in just as we are – angry,
dirty, grouchy, afraid, joyously happy.
We treat ourselves with the kindness we
had previously reserved for babies, or
grandmothers, or puppies. We learn what
to do with aspects of ourselves that
have frightened us or made us dislike
ourselves: our anger, our fear, our
giving up, running away, being mean,
talking too much. We learn to receive
all of this with gentleness rather than
disgust. And we use this same kindness
to receive our qualities of
understanding, patience, strength,
humor, intelligence.
Have you ever heard yourself say, “My
grandmother liked me, even when I was
bad”? We must become our own
grandmother, learning to hold ourselves
the way that she held us.
We can learn to receive ourselves
with a little work. (In truth a lot
of work)
In the healing process our physical,
mental-emotional, and spiritual bodies
come into a healthy, dynamic
relationship with each other and with
our environment. We can be with our
struggles from a different perspective:
climbing the ladder to see over the
fence. We can allow ourselves to be
more fully human, unafraid to experience
all human emotions and conditions.
