BENEFITS OF MERRILY’S MATH TUTORING

My intention is that students  find their own personal strength and confidence in a subject they may not have excelled in or enjoyed.

Students create their own intentions for success.

A quiet place to learn is provided with a one-on-one setting.

Study skills and organizational skills are emphasized.

Students learn how to work their math problems.  Trouble spots are clarified.  Gaps are filled.

Questions are addressed that have not been asked in class.

Students are taught exactly how and when to ask questions as math lessons are presented in class.

Basic skills are reviewed and strengthened.

Strategies are taught for solving story problems.

Study sheets are proved on a variety of topics: fractions, integers, percent, Δ trigonometry, special right Δ’s, factoring, solving proportions, etc.  New study sheets are created as students need them.  (Students use these study sheets for years.)

Personal test-taking strategies are analyzed to

            Improve test scores

            Increase speed

            Lower anxiety levels

Previous test/quiz errors are analyzed.  Missed problems on tests/quizzes are corrected.

Independence from calculator use is encouraged for simple calculations and to gain speed in computation.

Calculator skills are emphasized for graphing, matrices, tables, box-and-whisker, line of best-fit, etc..

Students learn to use their text to:  (Many classrooms no longer use textbooks.) to:

            Follow examples

            Find essential information

            Prepare for a test

ENRICHMENT  lessons include:

• using compass and ruler to construct circles, polygons, geometric designs

• compass work with constructions, platonic solids, flower and seed of life

• fractals

• Fibonacci sequence

• Pascal’s Δ

• mobius strib

• Platonic solids are introduced and analyzed and drawn with compass and ruler by interested students.  These complicated drawings include several constructions.
