What is Meditation?

Meditation is a heightened state of awareness, a movement to a higher state of consciousness.  This state of consciousness is achieved through a practice in which one pays constant attention to staying awake in the present moment.  As thoughts interrupt this awakened state, the meditator simply returns to the mantra, or whatever is being used as the focus of attention.
